Day 1 - Rotorua

By Luis:

I was a scary sight when I woke up!!! We went to bed a little after 5AM local time and I was up by 9AM. Karen was already up and showered. I felt like hell after only 4 hours of sleep, but let me tell you: the four S's did wonders for my looks and my disposition. For those of you who don't know, the four S's are: Sleep, Sh*t, Shower, and Shave.

We left at 10AM headed for Te Puia, in the Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley, a local geothermal attraction. We hiked for a couple of hours and had the chance to watch a Maori welcome ceremony.

After a wonderful ecological and cultural experience we headed for the Skyline Skyride Rotorua, where we rode a gondola cableway to the top of a mountain, then went down the three luge tracks several times... FUN!!!

By 2PM or so we were hungry, so we asked some of the locals and were directed to a local mom-and-pop for fish and chips takeaway. We drove to the shore of Lake Rotorua where we had a delicious picnic lunch of authentic fish and chips, wrapped up in newspaper and all. Very relaxing....

After lunch we headed for the Rotorua Museum of Art and History, which is housed in the original South Seas Spa building. Very interesting.

We then went shopping for the stuff we are taking to the kids in Kiribati. We wound up buying soda, wine, wine coolers, and ginger beer. After we arrived back at the hotel, we found out we had internet access. I thought I was going to have to wait another day or so to update you guys. Karen had a very relaxing soak in the spa tub then promptly fell asleep on the very comfortable bed. It is now about 8:30 PM, so I guess I'll wake her and head for the city centre for dinner....

The connection here is very slow, so pictures will have to wait....

Hey guys, I'm also glad you made it there safe. I'm sure you'll have plenty of time to make up for the lack of sleep.

Karen- I called your mom this morning and she said everything was fine and that she didn't need a jacket (it's going to be in the 40's tonight) I guess she misses her NJ weather?? Anyway.. she also said that Lauren hasn't tied her up yet and that she got a HAPPY GRAM yesterday. Everyone is fine!!

Take care...

Driving on the left-side is pretty easy to adjust to, but be diligent in parking lots. You will tend to drift to the wrong side.

WAAAZZZUPP!! (Thanks Kathy for your note about Adrian! i am a few weeks from having our second boy!)

Its nice to hear you guys made it ok. After I don't know how many 9 hour trips back and forth across the pond.... I can just imagine a 12 hour one.....LONG ASS FLIGHT. I did go on a 14 hour one, but luckily we were in first class (perks of the job).

Anyway - i am feeling a little nostalgic reading about authentic fish and chips (with vinegar I am sure) and driving on the other side of the road....... Tato - Come see my blog for the latest pics of LUKAS in the WOMB! He might just arrive while you guys are cruising around!
